In our series of features on our Athletics website, this is the third installment of "Meet the Lancers Athletics Staff." Steven Mojarro, an adjunct instructor in the Kinesiology, Health & Athletics Division, is in his second season as a PCC football assistant coach in charge of the offensive line and is a part of Coach Tom Maher's recruiting team. Here is a Q & A with Coach Mojarro, who has worked many years as a football coach previously at a number of colleges including East Los Angeles and Compton. Since 2010, Mojarro has seen more than 150 players he's coached move on to the 4-year level from community college.
What do you do to “recharge your battery?"
Every time a football player on our team receives an associates degree and transfers to a 4-year university, it is a reminder of what is important about being an athletics coach.
If you didn’t work in college athletics what would be your career?
If I didn't work in college athletics, I would have loved to have been a 10th grade world history teacher.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside athletics?
Traveling all over the world, and also following the Dodgers during the spring and summer have become my biggest interests outside of athletics. As for a hobby, I enjoy helping college students earn their associates degree and bachelor’s degrees who are also not a part of athletics teams.
Do you have a hidden talent?
I guess my hidden talent is making people who were having a bad day have a good day.
What TV shows take up space on your DVR?
Mostly past games of former players playing at the next level, boxing, and Game of Thrones.
Currently reading "Moneyball" the Billy Bean, Oakland A's general manager book.
I know I shouldn't eat them, but I love both red and blue Almond Joys chocolate.
If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I recently just came back from visiting Havana, Cuba, however I plan to return to Cuba and visit Varadero and Cienfuegos.
Favorite professional/college sports teams?
The Dodgers, the Lakers, Anaheim Ducks are my favorite local teams. As for the NFL, I cheer for the teams my players are on, so in the past or present I cheer on the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans.
Most memorable sporting event growing up?
My most memorable sporting event growing up has to be Kirk Gibson’s bottom of the ninth inning two-run, walk-off home run off the Oakland Athletics in the 1988 World Series. Kirk had injured both legs in the game’s leading up to the WS and that was just an amazing at bat to watch.
