It was an old-fashioned pitching duel Thursday between Pasadena City College freshman hurler Angel Wintercorn and Moorpark sophomore Caitlin Vinyard. Wintercorn twirled a 3-hitter but Vinyard matched it and struck out 12 Lancers as PCC lost its home opener, 1-0, at Robinson Park.
Sierra Huerta was one of the few Moorpark hitters to solve Wintercorn as she had two of her team's hits including the game's only score--a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the fourth inning.
Moorpark improved to 3-0 while Pasadena is 1-2.
PCC second baseman Alex Howard reached base in all three of her at bats with a single and two walks (and a stolen base).
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lancers had their best chance to plate a run as Angel Urbina walked and Howard lined a base hit to center. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Vinyard and her rising fastball ended the threat as she struck out both Amber Ingram and Alise Archuleta swinging to close out the inning.
Wintercorn, from Temple City High, retired the side in order in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings. Overall in the complete game, she walked just one batter and struck out five.
The Lancers next will visit Glendale College Friday, Feb. 3 in a 12 noon game at the Glendale Sports Complex.
