The Pasadena City College women's soccer team was limited in its scoring opportunities and settled for a 1-1 tie v. Antelope Valley Friday, snapping the team's 6-match win streak to start the 2017 season. Despite the deadlock, the Lancers are still undefeated and has a chance to match the school's best 8-game unbeaten streak next week. PCC went 4-0-4 to open the 2007 season and were 5-0-3 to end the 2012 regular season.
In the game at Robinson Stadium, things looked good for the Lancers when Summer Hofstad headed in a corner kick by Emily Matthiesen in the 12th minute. PCC held the 1-0 lead until just a few seconds before the first half whistle as AVC's Alyssa Sanchez got underneath the Lancers defense and drove a rolling shot at the top of the 18-yard box for the game-tying goal.
Both teams played it close and neutralized potential scoring chances throughout the second half. AVC is 5-2-1 on the season.
Chloe Twitchell, the team's top scorer, played mostly on the defensive end as PCC finished outshooting AVC, just 9-8. The Lancers had seven of their shots in the second half, but none that were a true scoring chance. Antelope Valley's Rielly Rasmussen was perhaps the game's best player as she often created plays and used several moves to go through PCC's midfield.
Coach Reggie Rivas reflected on the team's streak of victories.
"I'm very proud of the girls, and feel we played so hard to get out with a tie against a very good Antelope Valley team," Rivas said. "Regarding the 6-game winning streak, we kept telling the players to take each game one at a time. Now that our pre-conference schedule is over, we can look back and say 'wow,' no losses in seven games. Pretty cool accomplishment."
The Lancers (6-0-1) are No. 16 in the RPI power points rankings which ultimately determine the playoff seedings.
On a side note, PCC starting midfielder Brianna Aguilar wowed the crowd by singing a stirring rendetion of the national anthem from the press box just prior to the start of the contest. See twitter link for photo here: https://twitter.com/PCCAthletics/status/911379191945236480
