Jocelyn Jo, the Pasadena City College women's swim team school record holder in the 200-yard breaststroke, signed her national scholarship letter of intent today to attend NCAA Division II Western State Colorado University.
Jo is the second swimmer from PCC's 2018 team to gain a 4-year university scholarship after Melissa Cienega did so as an early signee before the season with Cal Baptist University.
Jo, a winner of an Elizabeth Jensen transfer scholarship from PCC, will swim for head coach Erik Matheson at WSCU. Matheson had previously been head coach in the South Coast Conference and got to watch Jo swim against his then East Los Angeles College team last year.
It was Jo's freshman season that earned her more accolades as she was the 2017 SCC Co-Swimmer of the Year with teammate Cienega. A graduate of South Pasadena High, Jo recorded four top 8 medals at the '17 and '18 CCCAA State Championship meets. Jo's school record in the 200 breaststroke was 2:26.77 and her 1:07.89 in the 100 breaststroke is the second-best mark in PCC history.
"JoJo became a solid competitor for us in her two seasons including her great run as a freshman," said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. "She's a tremendous student (3.8 GPA) and along with Melissa gave us two really strong leaders for two seasons. After being a conference swimmer of the year in her first season, it took the State Swimmer of the Year in Mt. San Antonio's Ashley Tse to beat her this year. Her technical proficiency in the breaststroke was so important to our medley relays. We're excited for her to continue her education and swimming career at Western State Colorado."
