In Memoriam: 1940s PJC Football Alum Douglas Gorrie

Douglas Gorrie, who was one of three brothers to play football at Pasadena Junior College in the 1940s, passed away from natural causes last month at the age of 91. Gorrie played two seasons in 1947-1948 under legendary community college head coach Tom Mallory.

Gorrie, who later became an assistant football coach, track and field, tennis coach, and a physical education dean at Santa Ana College, was the middle brother of a trio that would all play together in the same backfield at UC Santa Barbara (then Santa Barbara College) in 1950 with Douglas at halfback, Dick at quarterback and Dave at fullback. The three were recognized nationally in the publication Ripley's Believe It Or Not!

Each of the brothers were distinguished in the coaching field with the youngest Dave Gorrie, a member of the 1950 PJC state champion baseball team, becoming a long-time baseball coach at UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine University (passed away in 2015) and the older Dick Gorrie becoming a head football coach at Santa Ana.

Gorrie served a 2-year stint in the military as a member of the U.S. Navy. He later earned his doctorate in education at Oklahoma State University before returning to California and embarking on a 34-year teaching/coaching career at Santa Ana.

A celebration of Gorrie's life will be held this Saturday, October 24, 10 am, at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, 13922 Prospect Ave., Santa Ana, CA, 92705 (Corner of 17th St. & Prospect).
