Baseball's Omar Cisneros Signs With D1 University of Akron

Pasadena City College baseball shortstop Omar Cisneros is on his way to the NCAA Division I level as he signed with The University of Akron (Ohio).

Cisneros, an All-South Coast Conference selection and winner of the SCC Gold Glove Award for all defensive players, turned 30 double plays and led all conference shortstops in fielding percentage at .969 in 2026.

As a sophomore, he led the Lancers in batting with a .341 average to go with 34 RBI and a .458 on-base percentage, both second on the squad.

He helped head coach Pat McGee's Lancers advance to the Southern California Playoffs in each of his two seasons as part of an 8-year streak of PCC making it into the postseason.

"Omar made one of the biggest improvements from his freshman to sophomore seasons of any player I've coached here," McGee said. "He was already a gifted fielder with great hands and a strong arm, but he turned himself into a quality hitter. He has a line drive swing and started going to the opposite field more and more. He was our team leader on the field and guided our freshmen infielders. A great kid and Akron will love him."

Appropriately joining the Zips program as a fielder who regularly zipped the ball to first on his throws, Cisneros will play for a former California Community College player himself in Akron head coach Bryan Faulds, who originally was a pitcher and a later a coach at College of San Mateo. Akron plays in the competitive MAC (Mid-American Conference).

Cisneros is the first of several PCC sophomores expected to sign with universities in the coming weeks. Since taking over the Lancers program in 2015, McGee has sent 75 of his players to university programs.

Last month, he was able to see one of his former Lancers Gordon Ingebritson (2017-18 Lancers) inducted into the PCC Sports Hall of Fame.
