Men's Soccer Can't Catch Chaffey

After falling behind 2-0 by the 14-minute mark Tuesday, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team took control of the game for much of the final 76 minutes but Chaffey held on to defeat the Lancers, 3-2, at Robinson Stadium. PCC is winless in South Coast Conference North Division play at 0-4-1.

The Lancers (4-9-4 overall) cut it to 2-1 in the 50th minute when Marlon Flores drove in a goal from 20 yards out after a lead pass by Alexander Hernandez. Chaffey's Adrian Moreno tallied his second goal of the game in the 78th minute but PCC wouldn't quit as Pablo Buenrostro scored on a penalty kick in the 87th minute. It was the sophomore's team-leading sixth goal this season.

PCC ripped off 16 of its 22 shots in the second half. Buenrostro nearly gained the Lancers a tie just before the final game whistle as his bicycle kick attempt inside the box just went wide left of the near post. Lancers goalie Kristopher Gutierrez made nine saves in a brilliant effort, robbing at least three close-range scoring opportunties by Chaffey.

On October 27 at PCC, the Lancers lost to state No. 1-rated Cerritos, 4-1. Pasadena took a surprising 1-0 early lead just 75 seconds into the game when Buenrostro took a cross pass from Satchel Robinson and blasted in a shot from the center of the box into the right corner. The Falcons though took over things and the lead at 2-1 in the 39th minute when Carlos Payeras played a perfect give-and-go with teammate Christian Perez and finished with the goal. A red card (two yellows) was issued to Payeras' brother Eric Payeras in the 42nd minute. Despite PCC having an 11-to-10 player advantage the rest of the game, the Lancers couldn't capitalize offensively on the situation.

PCC, directed by acting head coach Gerry Mora, will next play at East Los Angeles College on Friday, Nov. 3 in a 2 p.m. conference game.
