Men's Soccer Explodes For Most Goals In 21 Years

The Pasadena City College men's soccer team spread the wealth as nine different players scored goals in the highest-scoring Lancers game since 2002--a 9-0 rout over Imperial Valley. The non-conference game was played Friday at Robinson Stadium.

The Lancers (4-2-2) used the contest to get many players opportunities to get scoring chances v. a hapless IVC team that stayed winless at 0-5-2. 

PCC outshot the Arabs, 39-5, and started the scoring bonanza in the 24th minute when Angel Nolasco dropped a short pass allowing a 14-yard blast and goal by Jose Perez. 

In the 33rd minute, Angel Concepcion took a lead pass from Titus Medina and drove in a shot from the 9-yard line. With 1:46 left in the first half, PCC made it 3-0 on a header goal by Eduardo Sanchez off a free kick from the 19-yard line by Chris Amador.

In the second half, the Lancers really poured it on as James Baker scored on a breakaway rifle from the 12-yard line in the 51st minute. That was followed two minutes later on Angel Ballesteros hard attack past the IVC goalie after taking a lead pass from Titus Medina. In the 61st minute, Miguel Medina crossed to Santiago Rivera for a 1-timer goal from the 5-yard line. 

Five minutes later, Miguel Medina fed a cross in the box, chipped in high into the net by Kevin Posada. The Medinas (not related) then teamed up as Titus made a steal then led Miguel for a short-range drive and goal at the 73rd minute. 

The onslaught ended with Baker making a nifty behind-the-back tap pass to Titus Medina for the ninth score with three minutes left. 

"A game like this we used to benefit us in being able to apply the type of offensive plan of attack that we've had a tough time doing in previous games," said PCC head coach Francisco Cantero. "We were able to capitalize on chances and get different players on the scoresheet. This was great to get a variety of different guys to know they are capable of helping us offensively."

Titus Medina finished with a goal and three assists while Miguel Medina had a goal and two helpers. Goalie William Southam only had to make one save for his first collegiate win and shutout.

The PCC record for most goals in a game is 11 and was done twice, the last in a 2002 match v. East Los Angeles. 

On a 4-game undefeated streak (2-0-2), the Lancers will play at College of the Canyons on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in a 6 p.m. game.
