Ung Posts 2nd Fastest 200 Butterfly In PCC Women's Swim History

Carmen Ung fittingly raced by herself Friday during the 200-yard butterfly event. Her 2:18.82 time in the solo race was the second fastest mark in Pasadena City College women's swim team history as she went on to win all three of her events in helping the Lancers defeat visiting Chaffey, 164-79, in a South Coast Conference dual meet.

Ung's mark was 2.37 seconds behind record holder Tiffany Wong (2:16.45 in 2015). The sophomore Ung also scored wins in more traditional fashion v. other swimmers in the 50 freestyle (26.82 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1:02.64). Ung also participated in a 200 medley relay victory with teammates Emily Gray, Jenny Kim, and Yvette Rosales (2:15.70). 

PCC improved to 2-1 in SCC meets.

Another Lancer having a big day was the freshman Gray, who won the 100 freestyle (58.10), 500 freestyle (5:49.60) and participated on both relay wins. PCC ended the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay behind the squad of Gray, Kim, Lori Nalbandian, and Rosales (4:38.89). 

Maryjane Martinez picked up event wins in both the 100 (1:10.33) and 200 backstroke (2:34.49) while Rosales swam to victory in the 1,000 freestyle in 13:17.04. Martinez took second in the 100 butterfly (1:06.94). 

Fernanda Alvarez, an All-SCC First Team water polo player in 2019, placed second in all three of her events, the 200 freestyle (2:25.18), the 200 backstroke (2:46.43) and the 500 freestyle (6:24.71). Nalbandian, also a teammate of Alvarez and All-SCC Second Team choice in water polo, did her part for the Lancers with second place swims in the 1,000 freesytle (14:59.12), 100 breaststroke (1:34.96), and 200 breaststroke (3:23.35). 

For Chaffey, Maddie Guevara won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. 

In a double dual meet v. host Mt. San Antonio and El Camino College on Feb. 28, the Lancers split, defeating El Camino, 139-101, and losing to the Mounties, 154-106. Ung scored three event wins in the 100 (1:07.51) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.26), and the 50 freestyle (25.58). Jackie Collier won the 1-meter diving board with 167.10 points. Gray swam a close second in the 100 freestyle at 58.63, just .41 of a second behind winner Valerie Chen of Mt. SAC. 

Coach Terry Stoddard's Lancers will next be in action on Friday, Mar. 20 when they travel to face host Rio Hondo and Long Beach City College in a SCC double dual meet. PCC's next home competition is the 20th Pasadena Invitational on April 3-4 at the Aquatic Center (April 2 diving only will be held at a location to be determined).
