Led by 400 meters champion Deniya Fields, the Pasadena City College women's track and field team placed ninth out of the 21 teams that scored for the program's highest finish in 12 years at the Southern California Championships held Saturday at Saddleback College.
The Lancers scored 23 points overall as one of four South Coast Conference colleges that made the top 10 (Mt. San Antonio won the SoCal team title).
The freshman Fields posted the state's fastest time to date with a 54.64 seconds mark to defeat Orange Coast's Jasmin Trujillo to the finish line by .91 of a second. The mark is a new PCC school record as she breaks the 2014 time of 55.22 set by Breanna Clark, who also was the last SoCal champion for the Lancers that year. The first place finish was good for 10 team points.
In the 200 meters, Jaylin Morgan raced 24.29 to take second place (eight scoring points) finishing behind SoCal champ Catalina Teran of Riverside CC (24.08). The sophomore Morgan's time was her fastest this year and fifth currently in the state.

Fields figured to win two titles but raced a surprising fourth place in the 800 meter finals (2:19.86) after registering the state's fastest time in Tuesday's SoCal Prelims at 2:14.67. That scored five more team points for PCC.
The Lancers had hoped to score in the 4x400 relay but after a 3:57.77 in the prelims the squad had an injury to one of their top sprinters and it resulted in PCC placing out of the scoring in ninth place (4:11.59).
Fields and Morgan will represent the Lancers, directed by head coach Innocent Egbunike, at the 3C2A State Championships on Saturday, May 17 at College of San Mateo.
