WVB's Hitting Revs Up In Riverside Victory
Kendall Schmedes, Rachel Johnson and Lania Potter each pounded 10 kills as the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team downed Riverside, 25-10, 25-15, 21-25, 25-18, Tuesday night in a non-conference match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.

Kendall Schmedes, Rachel Johnson and Lania Potter each pounded 10 kills as the Pasadena City College women's volleyball team downed Riverside, 25-10, 25-15, 21-25, 25-18, Tuesday night in a non-conference match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The Lancers, who are in first place in the South Coast Conference North Division, improved to 12-9 overall. Paige Clingaman (nine kills) and Vanessa Lopez (eight kills/and eight digs) rounded out a balanced hitting attack for PCC. Setter Emily Leung dished out 39 assists, served two aces, had two kills and chipped in six digs.
Riverside (8-11) had 10 kills from Kiara Oregon and 14 digs made by Roni Lopez.
Tied at 5-5 in the opening set, PCC pulled away and capped a 15-point win on an ace by libero Kelsey Sarreal. The Lancers scored the set's final eight points.
In the second set, the Tigers were as close as 12-11 but PCC went on another big run of 13-4 capped by an ace by Emily Ramirez that gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead. After Riverside battled back to win the third set, the Lancers took control early and built a 19-12 lead, coasting to the 4-set triumph.
Ramirez used her deadly serve to rip five aces. Sarreal added 11 digs and had three set assists. Schmedes (four), Potter (three) and Johnson (two) were strong at the net and combined on five blocks for points.
"We talked about responding from a tough match v. El Camino last Friday, and the team did that well," said PCC head coach Mike Terrill. "We had a misstep in the third set due to great defense and heart by Riverside. Overall our offense clicked. Emily Leung had one of her best matches I've seen and she got everyone flowing tonight. Our left sides were solid and Rachel and Nia continued to attack at a very high level. Kendall had an outstanding peformance as well."
The Lancers play at LA Trade Tech in a SCC crossover match on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Game time is 6 p.m.
